ChatGPT export + import guide
How to export your ChatGPT history — and actually keep using it
ChatGPT lets you download your chats, but the file it gives you is a dead end — a conversations.json you can read and nothing more. Here is the exact export path (verified July 2026), plus how to turn that archive back into a living history you can continue in any model.
To export your ChatGPT history, open chatgpt.com on desktop, go to Settings → Data controls → Export data, and click Export. OpenAI emails a .zip (a conversations.json file) within a few hours; the link expires after 24 hours. Then import that .zip into TulexAI to keep every chat.
Step by step
How to export your ChatGPT history
- 1
Open ChatGPT on a desktop browser
Go to chatgpt.com and sign in. Run the export from desktop web rather than the mobile app — the data-export option lives there and is the most reliable. Free, Plus, and Pro accounts can export; ChatGPT Team, Business, and Enterprise users need their workspace admin to run a compliance export instead.
- 2
Open Settings → Data controls
Click your profile icon in the top-right corner, choose Settings, then open the Data controls tab. This is where OpenAI keeps the data-export tool.
- 3
Click Export data → Confirm export
Under the Export data row, click Export, then Confirm export in the pop-up. ChatGPT queues an archive of your entire account and emails a download link to your account email address.
- 4
Download the .zip within 24 hours
The email usually arrives within a few hours (OpenAI officially allows up to 7 days). The download link expires 24 hours after it lands, so grab it promptly — check your spam and promotions folders if it seems slow. Inside the .zip is conversations.json (your full history) and a chat.html you can open in a browser to eyeball it.
- 5
Import the .zip into TulexAI
In TulexAI, open Settings → Import your AI history and drop the whole .zip (or just the conversations.json). Your chats are parsed in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any AI model and no tokens are spent — and filed into an "Imported from ChatGPT" project you can reopen and continue in GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, or any of TulexAI's models.
Export path: Settings → Data controls → Export data · verified July 2026.
What's inside the ChatGPT export?
Your download is a .zip. Here is what it contains and which file matters for importing.
- conversations.json — your full chat history, stored as a message tree so edits and regenerations are preserved.
- chat.html — a human-readable copy you can drag into any browser to read your chats.
- A media folder plus user.json / message_feedback.json in fuller exports.
- The whole account sits in one conversations.json — there is no per-conversation export from ChatGPT.
What comes across when you import it
What TulexAI keeps
- Every prompt you wrote and every answer ChatGPT gave, in the original order.
- The original date of each conversation, so imported chats sort naturally below your fresh ones.
- The model each answer used (e.g. gpt-4o, gpt-5), preserved on the message.
- Your conversation titles, auto-filed into an "Imported from ChatGPT" project.
What it can't bring across
- Generated and uploaded images come across as a text placeholder, not the picture itself.
- Hidden system messages, regenerated-away branches, and tool steps are skipped — you get the conversation you actually saw.
- ChatGPT Team / Enterprise history has to be exported by a workspace admin, not from personal Settings.
Can you actually re-use your ChatGPT history?
Exporting is the easy part — ChatGPT gives you a file and stops there. Here is the difference once you have it.
